What is Stop-n-Think! ?
It is a behavioral technology that utilizes basic principles of behavioral psychology in order to discipline kids. The initial focal point of Stop-n-Think! is a deck of image cards. The cards are attached by a key ring. They are meant to be a Focus-Breaker, to take your child's attention away from negative or angry behaviors. Children use the cards as reminders of the choices they have. It's hard to believe that in less than a month, sometimes a few weeks, your child learns to take ownership of his/her behavior, and embarrassing tantrums become part of the past. Parents and teachers find them easy to learn, simple to use, and a quiet way to effectively redirect children. Doesn't that sound nice?
So what does Stop-n-Think! do?
It works by giving your children ownership of their behaviors! Redirecting your children without embarrassing them in school and at home! Stopping temper tantrums before they start!
Stop-n-Think! was developed by a teacher and a Mother. It was developed out of these feelings of helplessness and exasperation in both the classroom, at home, and in public. The most exciting thing about this system is how easy it is to use. It becomes automatic and a part of you and your children's routine. The STOP-n-THINK system utilizes the Focus-Breaker and Decide Cards; child, parent, and teacher tested guide to using the technology; and Development Journal.
Where did this idea come from? My frustration level was high, both at home and in the classroom when dealing with behavior problems. I'm a special education teacher and a mother of two with one more child on the way! My years of training have taught me that visuals are great at getting kids' attention. I also learned that the best way to manage behavior is to redirect a child's attention. I decided to use the stop sign as a Focus Breaker and immediately follow with various pictures to give the children choices. The cards worked instantly with my students, and my own kids do not even need the cards anymore. The behavioral science behind the cards are to simply break the negative pattern of behavior, before it really gets rolling; immediately insert a new choice, chosen by the child; experience positive feedback and sense of control; and eventually remove the use of the cards, as children learn to internalize this natural way of developing emotional maturity. You can look at the cards as a scaffold to assist kids in reaching their emotional potential.
