This Program was Created out of my own Frustration and Disillusionment
There I was, October 12th. I had taught for six weeks now and felt like I had reached the lowest point of my adult life. It was horrible, depressing, and overwhelming. What happened to me? I remember when I started teaching nine years ago, I was idealistic, passionate, and full of energy! I did not have the mastery of the content or all the tricks and tools of a master, veteran teacher. But I was good. I remember seeing all of those negative complainers in the staff room and at lunch. I remembered thinking to myself, why the heck get into teaching in the first place if you are all so miserable. The negativity makes everyone else miserable too! Go do something else. I promised myself that I would never become one of “those” teachers. Punch in and punch out. Don’t even think about asking them to do anything extra, and wow, they hate kids too!???
But there I was, I hated my job, the kids drove me up the wall, and what ever compassion and excitement I could muster up was immediately sucked right out of me. Well after all it was not my fault, right? How dare the administration assign me five different preparations! Why was I teaching both Math and Science? Why do I get all of the “troubled” kids added to my classes? Answer. The fact is, it was my fault. Why? I was not clear on what I did and did not want, and I was not assertive. All I did was complain and begin to resent education.
I hit bottom. What luck! Bottom for me was at 32 not 55. It was in my seventh year not my 30th year, every year just surviving so I can retire. No, I guess I had a lower threshold of pain and misery then others. Actually many just quit at that point. I told myself, I have to do something. I am going to go postal at this rate. So I began to read. I read everything I could get my hands on. I read articles on burnout, I read books on psychology and teaching, life fulfillment, self help, etc. I listened to tapes. And really over the next few months not a lot changed. But I felt better! And an amazing thing began to happen to me. I realized that the kids were great, They actually became the best group I had ever had. I had the best response I ever had from the kids. How? I worked significantly less now. Slowly all that good stuff going in started to come out. I began teaching the kids alternative ways of how to be and think. It was not just the content. I drew from my life’s lessons and what I had learned from my mistakes. They really liked that. I became human again, whole. Over the last several months I have reviewed my daily journals and created a program that I wish I had when I started teaching, or became disillusioned. It is how I went from burnout-potential dropout, to a teacher with impact. After all, I think deep down, we all want to leave an impact on humanity. So in my pain, suffering, reflection, and research, I bring you the best that is out there. My motivation stems from the fact that I see a major problem in schools today. Teachers are “burning out” at an alarming rate. And that rate is increasing. We do not have a shortage of teachers, we have a retention problem. My wish and dreams are that ideas from this program will help create a ground swell to impart a change on the state of education today. I hope you join the good fight, and if you could learn just one or two life/career-changing ideas, you will perhaps agree, the cost of the program is well worth it.
